An Aspiring Teacher asked:
I have a shower mat that is made out of plastic material. After being used in the shower for some time, it has naturally gotten dirty. I have used several cleaners (ie – Tilex Mold and Mildew, Lysol, Comet), but none have been useful. Any suggestions, other than buying a new mat?

straight bleach
What is it that is on it exactly? Is it black mold, pink mildew, etc.?
I have two ways I clean these. One is the bathroom cleaner Kaboom! sprayed on both sides. (It drips, so I use that to clean the tub where my plastic mat is used.) That removes soap scum very well but doesn’t get all the mold, mineral deposits, and slime, although due diligence with an old toothbrush and Kaboom! will.
Easier, though, is throwing it into the wash, making sure it’s jumbled among the clothes so it can’t stick to itself with the suction cups. I put mine into the whites load, with hot water and bleach, although that temperature’s warped one plastic mat beyond usability. (Most survive it just fine.) They come out looking new, literally.
Do not put it in the dryer.
Put the mat in kitchen sink, weigh it down to keep it from floating, fill sink with water to cover add a cup of bleach. Be sure to rinse well to remove dead mold.
you can throw it in with the loads of bath towels, add a little baking soda along w/ the load at this time and let air dry.
How flexible is it? I throw mine in the washer with the shower curtain and towels. I also do this to my kitchen sink mats and it works great!
I sometime throw mine in the washing machine and throw bleach in the water. you can put it on a low cycle. but for just general cleaning I use scrubbing bubbles.
You could soak it in a bleach/water mixture for an hour or so, and hopefully that will get it back to looking new.
use baking soda or peroxide on a damp cloth
Put it in a solution of bleach and water and let it soak for a while.
Someone with strong arms..
He he he
I would use a hosehold cleaner somthing that will kill mildoo. mats are a damp dirty thing that if it dosen’t dry out, it will start to grow hairy stuff. Bleach is good after you have clean em. DON”T MIX CHIMICALS
